Have you ever seen the Grand Canyon in Arizona? Have you been there? Were you stunned by the sheer magnitude of this geological feature? How the colors change as the sun moves during the day… each change more beautiful and wonderous than the last?

I know I was. I went there when I was about 8 years old and to this day, I still remember my first impression of the place. More than anything else, it reconfirmed my belief that there was a God. There had to be… no one else could have created something that fantastic and on that scale.

Then during my geography classes in Secondary school, I learnt how the canyon was really created. A river ran through a plain a long long time ago… and over time, it carried off soil, rocks and anything else that it could manage. After years, decades, centuries even… the canyon would be created as enough material is carried away. Not in straight line but it curves and winds its way through the stream bed it has carved out.

This kind of reminds me of how I started out as an internet marketer. I knew nothing of the hows or the whys of what I was doing. Wandering through the various methods I was taught (in Success University), I looked for what I would be comfortable with. Methods that I could be confident would work for me.

It took time but slowly, I learnt and developed methods that worked for me. Whenever I hit more difficult areas, I adjusted my ‘route’ or methods til I found something that did work… at least for me.

So although my training materials show me straight routes, my learning curve meanders and discovers new things along the way. Its good to know that nothing is really set in stone!

Over time, I expect to find myself carving a deep ’stream’ bed that will stand the test of time. And who knows, in the years to come, some new internet marketer may come across my websites and say, “Wow! I wish I could reach her level.”

Are you carving out your own Grand Canyon? every little bit will help!

One of the blogs that I regularly read in my pursuit to improve my writing skills is CopyBlogger. Can’t say enough about how much I have been learning from him. A definite good resource to have!

Recently, Brian Clark wrote a post entitled “10 Steps to Becoming a Better Writer” and Robert Bruce got inspired to make the following video.

If you substitute the word “write” with whatever you are aiming to do, it’d probably work equally well. No one can get better at anything without working and practicing.

Just received this little gem in my inbox. It got me thinking about network marketing and why I was involved in it.

To help you and your prospects understand why Network Marketing is THE industry to be in, here is an excerpt from The Business School for People Who Like Helping People, by Robert T. Kiyosaki, with Sharon Lechter, CPA, authors of Rich Dad, Poor Dad. You may like to copy and paste it into a document and share it with your prospects.

I am sometimes asked, “Why do so few people make it to the top of their network marketing system?”

The truth is, the top of the network marketing system is open to everyone-unlike traditional corporate systems, which allow only one person to reach the top of the company. The reason most people do not reach the top is simply because they quit too soon. So why would someone quit short of the top?

Most people join only to make money. If they don’t make money in the first few months or years, they become discouraged and quit (and then often bad-mouth the industry!). Others quit and go looking for a company with a better compensation plan. But joining to make a few quick dollars is not the reason to get into the business.

The Two Essential Reasons to Join a Network Marketing Business

Reason #1 is to help yourself. Reason #2 is to help others. If you join for only one of these two reasons, then the system will not work for you.

Reason #1, means that you come to the business primarily to change quadrants-to change from the “E” (Employee) or the “S” (Self-employed) quadrant to the “B” (Business owner) or “I” (Investor) quadrant.

This change is normally very difficult for most people-because of money. The true “E” or “S” quadrant person will not work unless it is for money. This is also what causes people to not reach the top of the network marketing system: they want money more than they want to change quadrants.

A “B” quadrant or “I” quadrant person will also work for money, but in a different way. The “B’ quadrant person works to build or create an asset-in this case, a business system. The “I” quadrant person invests in the asset or the system.

As a “B” or an “I”, sometimes you don’t get paid for years; this, a true “E” quadrant or “S” quadrant person will not do. It’s not part of their core values. Risk and delayed gratification disturb them emotionally.

Delayed Gratification and Emotional Intelligence

One of the beauties of network marketing is that it focuses on developing your emotional intelligence as well as your business skills.

Emotional intelligence is an entirely different matter from academic intelligence. In general, someone with high emotional intelligence will often do better than someone with high academic intelligence but low emotional intelligence. That explains, in part, why some people do well in school but not so well in the real world.

The ability to delay gratification is a sign of higher emotional intelligence. In a recent study of emotional intelligence, it was found that people who could delay gratification often led more successful lives than those who could not.

This is why the educational system inherent in a good network marketing opportunity is so important. It’s the emotional education or emotional intelligence aspect of their programs that I find so valuable for people.

Many people write me and tell me they loved my book, Rich Dad, Poor Dad, but I fear that many of them don’t get the most important point of the book: Lesson #1, “The rich don’t work for money.”

Once I have built or bought an asset, that asset works hard to make money for me. But I will not work for money-I will work only to build or buy assets. Those assets make me richer and richer, while I work less and less. That is what the rich do. The poor and middle class work hard for money, and then buy liabilities instead of investing in assets.

What Kind of Asset is a Network Marketing Business?

Remember, there are two reasons required to be successful in network marketing: to help yourself, and to help others. Reason #1 means helping yourself get to the “B” side of the quadrant. What about reason #2?

The beauty of most network marketing systems is that you don’t really make much money unless you help others leave the “E” and “S” quadrants and succeed in the “B” and “I” quadrants. If you focus on helping others make this shift, then you will be successful in the business.

If you only want to teach yourself to be a “B” quadrant and “I” quadrant person, then a true network marketing system won’t work for you. You may as well go to a traditional business school, which focuses only on your becoming a “B” quadrant person.
The beauty of a network marketing business is that your goal is to create assets, which are other “B’s” working under you-and their job is to create other “B’s” working under them. In traditional business, the focus is for the “B” to have only “E’s” and “S’s” working for them.

The type of business I was taught to build is a business with me at the top and “E’s” and “S’s” at the base. I really don’t have room at the top for many other “B’s”, which is why in my businesses, I strongly recommend that all my employees look into network marketing as their own part-time businesses.

The traditional corporate system really is a pyramid, because there are a few “B’s” and “I’s” near the top, and more “E’s” and “S’s” at the base. A network marketing system is a reverse pyramid: its primary focus is to bring up more and more “B’s” to the top.

One type of pyramid, the traditional type, has its base on the ground; the other type has its base in the air. It’s a pyramid that pulls you up instead of pushing you down. A network marketing business gives everyone access to what used to be the domain only of the rich.

That it from me… enjoy your weekend!

Just finished watching Oprah today. It was a show entitled “The Secrets of My Big Success” originally aired April 23rd. (in Singapore we get all the reruns… sigh)

It featured Russell Simmons. “Who’s he?” you’ll probably be asking… I did too. He is the ‘Father’ of Hip Hop. This guy was the one who brought a street phenomenon to the mainstream and made it a cash cow. (more on him here) All in all, a pretty motivated self-made businessman. What impressed me was his down to earth attitude throughout the show. Maybe its just an act but he came across as being genuine and just a regular guy.

He spoke about the importance of being the person you were meant to be. Not the person that everyone wants you to be. In other words, “DO YOU!” Search inside for the passions, dreams and goals that you want. Not your mother, wife, teacher or even Pastor. Then go out and do the work to fulfill that potential.

He just published a book “DO YOU!” which talks about 12 Laws allowing you to access the power in you to achieve happiness and success. I’m planning to go find it and read it. Given the rave review by Oprah and other reviews on Amazon… I hope you do too!

This is served as an important reminder to stop every so often and check that I’m still on the right track. That I am still focused on my goals and dreams. Are you?

Its been a couple of months since my last post. Life has been extremely busy and hectic. So what’s been happening…

Well, we’ve moved from one housing estate to another. Given that my husband works full time and my oldest child is only 5, the packing and unpacking of the house fell mostly on my shoulders. Its been a tough road and I’ve still got boxes to unpack but life must go on!

Along the way, I lost a good friend and mentor to cancer, nursed my daughter through a bout of chicken pox and survived three weeks during which we all took turns to have high fevers.

While all that was happening, I had engaged the services of Randa to help give my blog a face lift. I wanted something that looked fresh and inviting. Please do let me know if we’ve achieved that aim!

I’ll be posting more often… got quite a few ideas simmering in my head already.

Its the school holidays and my hubby has been home with us. Yesterday, we asked my parents for help and sent the kids out to be babysat til evening. So what did the two of us do alone at home?

Singularly unromantically, we cleared our storeroom. (what were you thinking? *grin*) You see we’re preparing for our move to the new place next month and we needed the time away from the kids to tackle our ‘junk pile’ in peace. (can you imagine if we did it with the kids around? my 21 month old would have been playing with dusty things or ‘helping’ to pack while unpacking)

With the kids away, we finished the job in slightly less than six hours. Our new ‘improved’ storeroom is full of packed boxes of stuff. We decluttered and threw away lots of things.

To be honest, clearing the storeroom was a big ‘boogey man’ task for me. It seemed so overwhelming and I was scared of tackling it. But with our ‘date’ set and plans made, we got started. It was so much easier with someone by my side helping me and spurring me on.

Similarly, when you start out in internet marketing or in any other business, you need team members or partners to help motivate you and encourage you. So that when you lose steam and get discouraged, there’s someone to come along side to give the support needed.

I’ve got a great partner, Irene, and a supportive team, OnlineIncomeHub, with me in my Success University business. Without them, I’d still be a ‘regular’ housewife doing boring ‘mummish’ things. With them, I’m learning so much, growing as an individual and earning money that is helping my family.

How many of you are regular watchers of American Idol? They are now in their 5th season and seem to be very popular all around the world.

I love to watch the initial episodes where the ‘man on the street’ auditions. Its amazing how many over inflated egos there are in this world. People who think they are the best but actually are proven to be full of hot air.

As I watched last night’s performances of the top 8 guys, I realized that there were internet marketing lessons that could be learned from the show, the contestants and the comments made by the judges.

Presentation

Simon made some comments about how the girls dressed last week. Its funny coming from a guy who predominantly wears “dusky grey” t-shirts. But its a valid point.

As internet marketers, we need to present a polished, professional image of ourselves. Whether you’re ‘just another blogger’ or the owner of an online business venture, the impression our readers/customers get when reading one of our advertisements or our website is of utmost importance.

First impressions COUNT!

So if you need to, get some professional help (not from Simon!) to make sure you look good to the world at large.

Standing Out from the Crowd

Many of the singers can sing. After the lengthy audition process, those who have survived the cuts have talent. Now, its really up to them to use that talent to go above and beyond the rest of the crowd.

Remember when Clay Aiken sang ‘Solitare’? It was a old familiar favorite but he turned it completely inside out and made it his own. Melinda Doolittle did the same thing with ‘My Funny Valentine’ last week.

The network marketing community online is so huge that as a newcomer its easy to get lost in the crowd. To be successful, you need to find something to differentiate you from the rest.

It could be providing an essential service, deciding to be controversial and attacking a known expert in the field or simply giving a unique point of view in your posts.

Whatever you decide, stick with it and make it your very own.

Pushing Your Limits

A frequent comment heard from the judges is ‘you got to go for it’. They aren’t content with just hearing a regular song being sung by someone talented. They want the ‘X factor’ in each and every performance.

If you watched the performances of the top 12, it was obvious that the girls were out to win while the guys gave rather forgettable performances. However by the next week, the guys pulled their socks up and came on stage ready to prove they were in the competition as well.

When you first start out with internet marketing, you may just do what your upline tells you to. Beware! Just doing the steps will not get you the results you want. You need to understand the strategies being shown to you, internalize them and come up with something that will push the existing boundaries. If you succeed in doing this, your business will shoot through the roof. This I can promise you!

Don’t be mediocre. Be GREAT!

Be Nice

A good sporting spirit is important. During the audition process, we were treated to many instances of people responding with vulgarities when they were rejected. Even during the recent performances, you had one singer who left saying they made a huge mistake while another said “I’m going out with a bang” and then sang his heart out.

Frankly, I think the 2nd singer is going to have a much better life than the first.

So play nice… there is a internet marketer who is making money by selling his marketing system that promotes being obnoxious and rude. Although I did obtain his book, the methods used just didn’t rest easy on my mind. Did I want to be known for being unpleasant? even if I earned millions from doing so, I don’t think the impact on my mental view of myself would be worth it.

I believe in the rule ‘Do to others as you would want them to do to you.’

Losing can be a good thing

Looking back at the past season’s winners, not all of them have made it ‘big’ on the billboard charts. Some, I think, are doing well in their particular niche genres.

What is interesting is looking at what’s happened to those who didn’t win.

Like Chris Daughtry… he came in third during Season 5. Was he disappointed? I’m sure he was. However, his band launched a debut album that sold over a million copies! far outselling his fellow season 5 contestants’ debut albums. Recently, he was quoted saying losing AI was actually for the better because he really wanted to concentrate on rock music.

Clay Aiken is a good example. A runner-up that has sold more copies of albums than most other winners. His single “Bridge over Troubled Water” went platinum after only a month and a half of sales.

Most recently, Jennifer Hudson made headlines with her Oscar win for the show, Dreamgirls. Her fellow contestant and eventual winner of Season 3, Fantasia, didn’t get the role although she did audition for it.

These examples just go to show that losing isn’t the end of the road. It can be used to springboard yourself into a situation where success is possible. You need to have the right attitude and learn as much as possible from failures.

Are there any other lessons you can think of that you’ve learned from television shows or movies? I’d love to hear your ideas.

When I heard Jim Rohn speak about the importance of keeping an idea journal, it caught my attention immediately. Why? you may ask….

Well, in its simplest form an idea journal is created when we take the trouble (time and energy) to put our ideas to paper (or on the computer). What form the journal takes makes no difference. It could be a 50 cent notebook or a personalized, specially made journal. The important thing about it is that it becomes *the* place for you to record all your ideas, not matter how silly or small they may appear to be.

So why is the journal so important? As we go through the day, each experience may spark off different ideas. I know I get ideas on what to post sometimes by just watching my kids play. Sometimes the ideas seem to be total flights of fancy while others are more ’solid’ and ‘doable’. Regardless of how we think of them, they should be written down in our idea journal. So that our passing thoughts/ideas aren’t just discarded but can be evaluated for their worth and value. What may seem unreachable at the moment, may not be so in the future especially as we keep growing and learning.

Its similar to the first time you try to roller skate or skateboard. You think you’ll never be able to master the balance and coordination needed to make it look effortless. However after you do master the skill, your mind set will change to accommodate this new skill set and we don’t really understand why it would be too hard to learn for anyone.

Likewise, old ideas that we may deem as mere flights of fancy can one day be made into reality. However, those dreams would be totally lost unless we had recorded them down somewhere - an idea journal would be the best place! Simply keep a notebook handy at all times and commit to jotting down your various ideas. Your next wonderful success story may just come from this journal sometime in the future.

Just imagine what must have run through Sheryl Leach’s mind when she first thought of a purple dinosaur starring in a television program! Yet she committed the idea to paper and now Barney seems to be everywhere!

See what your ideas bring you!

Whew… its been a really busy week. Sorry for the lack of posts.

I’m proud to say I’ve just finished setting up (designing, copywriting, photography, hosting, autoresponder) website. There was so much learning to be done from HTML to Photoshop but I’m glad I did it. And I’m glad I had friends around who were willing to help me out when I got stuck.

To be honest, when I first started, it seemed like a huge project. How would I ever manage to get something presentable up and running? especially since I have very little prior knowledge of the “how to”s.

So what made it work? easy… break everything down into baby steps. Things that can be accomplished in little to no time. So I started with recording my video… took two days to do that and I still wasn’t satisfied with the quality… but remember the rule “perfectionism kills”? I took that to heart and kept going.

Next step, get the webpage done… but before doing that… get the necessary code from the autoresponder. So I spent about half a day tinkering around with the autoresponder until I got it to work the way I wanted. Then I tried plugging in the code to the webpage.

HTML is pure greek… took me a while to understand the intricacies of the language. Sigh. Must have fiddled with the code for a day before I got it to go where it was supposed to. Once the page was done, it was time to figure out how to upload it to the host.

To cut a long story short… the web page was finally completed to my satisfaction. Its not perfect but its mine! and the feeling of success and achievement is well worth the effort it took.

So you see, it is possible to take what seems like a ‘giant’ project and break it down into smaller parts. Then as you finish each part you’ll get the satisfaction of accomplishing something and that will probably give you more incentive to get going on the next step.

Try it and let me know how it works out. Remember baby steps are the key to success!

Written 10pm Jan 1 2007

Wow! Another year has passed and we’re on the brink of a brand new year… a clean slate where we can record what we wish… fulfil dreams… live large or… stay buried in failures and disappointments.

I’ve been doing some thinking on what goals I’d like to fulfil in this new year. The temptation to dwell on my disappointments and failures in 2006 is so very strong. The choice to not set new goal posts and dream new dreams for myself is attractive. But seriously, would it be what is best for me? I doubt so…

So here’s a couple of things I’m determined *not* to do.

1. I will not expect the world to provide my success

So many people seem to expect others to “owe them a living”. You hear of sob stories whenever an autosurf, hyip or other affiliate program crash.

Didn’t they read the small print that reminds us to only play with what we can afford to lose?

Its time to accept that the admins of all the various programs are out to make a buck/dollar too… that’s they’re priority. Not looking after our interests!

Action to take : Find something that captures your interest and has the potential to help you reach your goals. Then work on it! Nothing comes to those who do nothing.

2. I will get read to leave my comfort zone and get ‘dirty’

Being naturally lazy, I’d rather not do any work at all and still live well with spending money. Learning new skills or doing research on relevant topics is never easy. However, in order to be successful, sometimes you need to roll up your sleeves and do things that aren’t pleasant in order to get ahead.

For instance, if you’ve always hated doing sales but its one of the things needed in your business… then do it! Go out and talk to the people you need to talk to. Push your product.

Action to take : Determine what is needed for your business. Set out small steps to take in order to fulfil those needs. Then do the steps even if you don’t like to.

3. I will expect difficulties

Life is never a smooth sail, a bed of roses. There will be storms and thorns. Its part of life! Although we would all like to have it comfortable and easy, it rarely stays that way for long.

Accidents happen. Problems turn up. People cause us heartaches. When we set out a business plan, we need to plan for difficulties. We need to give allowances for delays or losses.

Action to take : Think of all the possible things that could go wrong. Then decide how you will deal with them if they do occur. Keep the list close by so you can refer to it when things do happen.

4. I will dream a dream; have a vision

If you don’t have a vision… you won’t achieve much. The higher you aim, the more likely you will succeed in some degree. If you aim for the stars, you may hit the moon. That will still be better than staying in the mud.

Make sure your dream is clear and specific. Don’t just say, “I want to be rich.” Say “I want to have a residual income of $X per month.”

Action to take : Dream a dream. Write down your vision statement and keep it where you can see it all the time.

5. I will use the power of my imagination

Imagination… an underused aspect of our minds. Learn to use it to visualise yourself achieving your dream. Imagine yourself fulfilling your goal in as much detail as possible – include tastes, sounds, smells, touch… everything that will make it as real as possible in your mind.

Work on your mental picture until it becomes crystal clear. Hold it in your mind and ‘look’ at it often. Remember that in the realm of imagination, there are *no* limitations!

Action to take : Develop a mental picture of where you want to be. What you want to be/have. Then look at it often.

6. I will develop the strength to handle failures

I was given a definition of “Strength” by a leading businessman recently.

“Strength is the ability to bounce back when you’re knocked down.”

Think of the Rocky movies. Everytime Rocky was knocked down during a fight, he got right back up and kept throwing punches. That’s the spirit that we need to cultivate. The singular focus on reaching a goal regardless of what life may throw at us.

I’m determined to make it big this year. I will be working hard at achieving an on-going income for myself and my family. We deserve and need it. I will depend on my own efforts and not others. I hope you’ll join me on my journey towards success.
